Memorial Day - As we honor those that gave their lives to keep us free
Sgt. Robert A. Hendricks
A tribute to a fallen U.S. Marine
It is with great sadness that is in all our hearts to acknowledge that Locust Valley has lost one of its own. Sgt. Robert A. Hendricks was killed at 25 years of age, along with 2 other Marines, in Afghanistan, while performing their duties on recon in their armored vehicle near Bagram Air Base. It was blasted by a road-side bomb on April 8th, 2019. Robert was a graduate of the Locust Valley School system.
On graduating from High School he joined the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines based in Garden City. He followed in the foot-steps of his mother's and father's families who had a long history of military service in the United States of America.
The Bayville American Legion Post 1285, provided a School Bus, ( we thank you for that call ) together with an invitation from Locust Valley American Legion Post 962 and Glen Cove VFW Post 347 to join them for the journey
to the Wake of Sgt. Hendricks at Whitting's Funeral Home to pay respects and salute a fallen American Hero. Also present were members of Locust Valley, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 962. On the day of his funeral, at Calverton National Cemetery, Locust Valley, American Post 962 Commander Douglas Gamble led a contingent of Post 962 members, namely, Staff Sgt. Charise Herrera, active duty USMC, Carl Buhr, Robert Harrington, Douglas Kassner and Lawrence Schmidlapp for a final salute for Sgt. Hendrick, whose service and supreme sacrifice in the name of the American way of life, will be remembered for many years to come.
